Prep 1: Markdown and GitHub

Due: Thursday, September 10th, 10am

This prep will guide you through getting set up to do your first assignment. It should take about 30 minutes.

Your Tasks

  1. Background reading. If you have not used Markdown before, briefly review the Markdown resources on the class's resource page.

  2. Configure and authenticate your GitHub account on your machine. If you have not previously used Git and your personal GitHub account (not your MIT Enterprise GitHub account) on your computer, you will need to create an SSH token on your computer and add it to GitHub to verify your identity. See GitHub's documentation on generating an SSH key and adding it to your account. Please do not use the MIT Enterprise GitHub for this class.

  3. Create your repository. Create a blank private repository (see GitHub's instructions) and use Markdown to write the skeleton for your first assignment. Use the structure described here.

  4. Commit to GitHub. Use git to add, commit and push your local changes to the remote repo in GitHub.

  5. Add the instructors as collaborators. Viewing your repo on GitHub, go to "Settings" -> "Collaborators". Click "Add people", enter in 61040-fa26-staff and click "Add".

  6. Recitation. Come to recitation with your laptop and your repository running locally so you can participate in some small exercises to further your understanding. And of course, bring whatever questions you might have!
